Sustainable Subject

My chosen subject for this assignment and my classical animation piece is the sustainability of transportation.

For this animation my chosen audience will be the younger generation as this subject is typically something that is discussed and known by the current/ older generation so creating something for them may be more pointless as they already know in comparison to someone who is younger. The purpose of the animation will be to teach younger people why choosing sustainable transportation is important and also how it is beneficial to them and their future, having something that teaches whilst they are young is effective as it gives them an early understanding, meaning they will grow up to be more sustainable.

The sustainability of transportation is important for a number of reasons.

  • Decreased Congestion
  • Provides Safe Transport
  • Lower Transportation Costs
  • Saves Energy
  • Emits Less Pollution
  • Saves Money
  • Electric Car
  • Transit
  • Promotes Health
  • Creates Jobs

“When I know that a litre of petrol pollutes 10,000 litres of air, I realise that this fuel is far too cheap. “

Franz Alt, Interview SonnenseiteThe future of energy – a moral dilemma – The market is ecologically blind, October 2011

When it comes to pollution in our planet, transport is one of the largest reasons and globally produces a quarter of the planets CO2 emissions. Vehicles that use either petrol or diesel have a huge effect on climate change and also cause poor urban air quality and are harmful to public health, shockingly, in the UK alone more than 35,000 people a year die due to air pollution.

In the UK nearly a third of greenhouse gas emissions come from the transport sector with most of that coming from road vehicles, and in 2019 this created a total of 122 million metric tons of carbon dioxide which is more than agriculture and residential carbon emissions combined.

The COVID-19 pandemic produced the largest ever drop in emissions in the year 2020 when they dropped by 19% due to the lockdown in place and the reduction of domestic and international travel.

“In a typical day, an electric car uses about as much electricity as four plasma TVs.”

Mark Duvall, head of the electric car program at the Electric Power Research Institute in Palo Alto, California.

Examples of methods of sustainable transport include any transport that runs on electricity and also alternative fuels such as hydrogen and biofuel, there are even more sustainable ways to transport to where you want, for example you could walk/ run or go on a cycle/ scooter. Public transport is also an option to and would be more sustainable if people used it more when they can.

The use of sustainable transport will significantly reduce negative impact on our environment due to it been more energy efficient, low on or zero emissions and will be effective perhaps in a more personal manner due to it been more affordable. For example, on average to fully refill a petrol or diesel car it will cost you between 19-21p whereas if you were to have an electric car it could cost as little as 3p per mile if you were to charge at home or anywhere between 14-18p for public charging.
