Post graduation my ideal chosen career would be within the sports industry of graphic design. Whether it be marketing, advertisement, creating a brand identity or something such as creating a User Interface and website for a football club (for example). This could be something designed for either the digital world or physical.

For this project I would like to design content for Hull City Football Club, I intend to design my own brand identity for the club, for example:

  • A few examples of some publication design, more specifically the match day programmes, to me the past ones have been too basic.
  • A range of marketing and advertising as well as some illustration for the club for the stadium inside and outside as I feel this is something the club lacks.
  • Sub brands for the club, allowing the club to target specific audiences and subjects.

My intentions for this project would be to push the clubs branding and branch it out to a wider audience as in my opinion this is something the club lacks at the moment and the only place you see any real advertising or branding for the club is on social media. My aim would be to create a completely refreshed brand identity that would bring in a larger audience of people and fans to the club by pushing the branding out further across the city opposed to how it is currently where the only advertising you see for the club is either online or at the stadium.

Creating a refreshed brand could also allow me to design and develop sub brands. Doing this would allow me to create a variety of things, ranging from merchandise that could help raise funds for the club, or something such as a charity brand where the club could sell special items with the funds going to charity. Creating sub brands could help the club target different people specifically and help them feel more welcome and belonging to the club, further bringing in more people/fans. Creating sub brands would allow the club to target specific audiences and enter different markets without damaging the clubs main brand, allows the club to differentiate and specialise in certain products, subjects, audiences and so on.

Something the club is proud about is the fans and local community, my aim would be to further fortify this and create a brand that involves the local community a lot more, something that makes the people be proud to be from Hull and a fan of the club, as Hull is a place that is mocked quite easily and a lot of people joke about and discriminate against.

My reasoning for this is sport is something I have loved and held interest all my life along with graphic design, so having a job in that field work would be the perfect scenario for me. To add to this my strengths within graphic design and what I enjoy the most is the more still graphics as apposed to motion graphics which I don’t enjoy as much. Typically those within the sports industry within graphic design use a lot of the Adobe programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Express and so on, which I am more experienced and skilled with and create the most of my Graphic Design content with.

Developing this project will also prepare me and give me some experience of what it would be like if I were to work for an agency as I will be working with an already known brand and creating my own form of graphics/ work from what is already provided to me (such as the club crest, colours, nickname etc).

Leyton Orient’s website and their requirements for their vacancy.
Coventry FC’s website and their requirements for their vacancy.
Mansfield Town’s website and the requirements for their vacancy.

When researching a few examples of vacancies available at other football clubs, almost all of them mention of needing experience and skill within the Adobe Creative Suite, with Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign been more heavily mentioned. Doing this project will allow me to fill any gaps I have within these apps as previously when working within these apps I typically only used the more beginner tools and so within this project I would like to try and use the more advanced tools and try more technically challenging aspects of each app. Doing this project will further fortify my experience and skills within each Adobe app and prepare me more for when I graduate and begin my graphic design career, increasing my chances of potentially been hired.

Bamford, AB, (2025). ILOVEDUST rebrands Nike Football with a fearless new identity rooted in attacking play (Article). Available Online: https://www.creativeboom.com/inspiration/ilovedust-rebrands-nike-football-with-a-fearless-new-identity-rooted-in-attacking-play

Above is an article I decided to view on the creative boom website, this article I found quite useful and insightful as it is relevant to my chosen subject area of sport. The article explains how a Brighton based studio tackled creating a new brand identity for Nike Football. The article starts off with some deep diving research into Nike, and then dives into how they planned out and created their project, the studio showcased their designs and then explained their reasoning for why they designed it this way. The post showcases their logo design, typography and a fresh photographic style. This post I find quite useful as it gives an insight of how a graphic design team approached the same subject field as me and has given me inspiration and some thoughts as to how I can plan out and create my project. The post was also a helpful piece of inspiration as they included lots of images and early stages of their work and how they thought and came to their design choices.
