Conceptual Design Idea and Research

Stonehenge is a prehistoric megalithic structure that can be found in Salisbury Plains in Wiltshire, England. The structure consists of multiple large stones with an average height of around 4 metres tall and a width of around 2 metres and each stone is believed to weigh anywhere between 25-35 tons.

It is believed by archaeologists that the structure was constructed in multiple stages between the years 3100 BC and 1600 BC meaning the structure is believed to have taken 1500 years to finish.

There’s little to no knowledge of how the structure was built leaving many scholars and archaeologists today still questioning it. Due to this many people have speculated the structure has supernatural origins and suggested that it may have been built by ancient alien technology or magic.

It is believed that the purpose/ the reasoning of building Stonehenge was that it acts as a celestial observatory or calendar. This is because during the summer solstice the sun rises perfectly over the Heel Stone and its rays are cast into the centre of the stone circle and the exact same happens during the winter solstice too.

As the brief for my chosen subject requires me to create a scene of Stonehenge made of Swiss cheese I googled online “Stonehenge made of cheese” and “Stonehenge made from food” to give myself an idea of how it looks and how I can layout and model my Stonehenge for my animation and give myself an overall idea of how I can change the look of a normal rocky Stonehenge and make it more cheese like.

For my chosen animation I want it to be more of a cartoon style as I felt if it had been in a more realistic style it would look weird for what the assignment is asking and what I want to achieve within my animation and so a cartoon style would be more suitable as it seems more unserious and unrealistic and a cartoon style would be a lot more fitting for my chosen subject.

For my animation I took heavy inspiration and thought about a film I watched when I was a kid called “Cloudy with a chance of meatballs” which is a film that is based on a world that is made out of food which is the concept that I wanted to include in my animation as it makes sense for what I want to achieve in my animation. I will try to achieve this look the best I can by having other items in my scene that are made from food to further reinforce the concept and idea behind the animation.

Here is a scene from the film I mentioned.https://www.eater.com/2013/10/3/6360851/review-the-surprising-meatiness-of-cloudy-with-a-chance-of-meatballs-2

To match the style the best I can my scene will be made to look a bit more plastic like and also the use of more bright and vivid colours that you can see are used within the film.
