Design Portfolio

The aim of this web page is to take you through the history of design and how it has changed over time, and how each style of design can be used in a modern and contemporary way.

Victorian

The first style of this webpage I decided to choose was Victorian design, as Victorian graphic design was used quite regularly to create advertisements and promotions, for example the image I have provided is an old advertisement for a clothing house.

For my redesign I decided to create something that stayed relevant to that so I created a webpage where you can buy jewellery online, creating the page with a similar decorated sans- serif font that was used in Victorian times and used a dull off looking colour for the background and then added some decoration/ patterns around the edging like you see in Victorian design too.

Futurism

Futurism was a movement that originated in Italy, the aim of Futurism was to capture the dynamism and energy of the modern day world at the time in art.

When looking at the example of Futurism on the left I felt it looked a bit like an old treasure map, having the same off white and yellowed colour of a map and the lines going throughout looking like a path. Due to this I created a webpage where you can book a treasure hunt activity online, I created this by using that same yellowed off looking colour for the background and also added the random strokes and lines and added within them “X MARKS THE SPOT” to further clarify the topic of the webpage.

Early Modern

Early Modern design was a time where artists and designers broke from the norms and tradition to create a new form of design.

For my design I followed this same trend creating a webpage in the same style as the image on the left by building a online store page for Hull City, I used the same blocks of colour and made each block a tile that you can click on. This isn’t typically a layout you’d expect to see for a website which keeps it relevant to early modern design. This could be created again for almost anything you wanted it to be.

Art Deco

Art Deco was mainly known as an architectural design, and when you see graphical designs in the form of art deco you regularly see the use of buildings, or something that has been built such as the ship on the left.

To follow this trend I created a home screen for a modern day webpage that shows you the history of Hull and its building and architecture, but in the style of art deco.

Late Modern

Late Modern design is more minimalistic and is created using simple geometric shapes combined with organic shapes. It was mostly used to create things such as book covers or magazine covers.

For my design I followed this trend creating it in a modern day webpage for an online football programme using circles for the players and using an organic shape to create the football pitch and then finishing it using a similar serif font that is heavily used in the late modern style.

Psychedelic

Something that is described as Psychedelic may be due to its wavy look/ pattern, its bright bold colours and free flowing lines. Something that is Psychedelic may be also be used to describe something that is “trippy” to look at.

For my design I tried to think of what gives the same “trippy” feeling and one of my thoughts was at a fair when your on a ride and you may get that dizzy feeling. Also at a fair you can expect to see those intense colours that you would in a psychedelic piece of work, which is why I decided to create a webpage where you can book tickets and see the opening times for a fair ground.

Post Modern

Post Modern design is described as a style that is colourful and decorative, as you can see on the image on the left.

When I look at Post Modern design to me it looks like someone has took a photo of someone and edited it splashed lots of different colours and shapes of the top of the image. Due to this my idea was to create a modern day app for a photo editor where you can edit your photos by doing the same thing, playing with shapes and colour on your photo.

Swiss

Swiss design is heavily characterized by a minimalistic block layout finished with sans- serif typefaces and is typically designed with an asymmetrical layout.

For my design I followed this trend and created a modern webpage, an online art gallery where you can look at all of Swiss design, I created the page in a Swiss fashion by creating it with block like look and quite a minimal look and also using a sans- serif font, and created it in an asymmetrical layout.

Grunge

Grunge design is a style that is typically less uniform and less structured.

Grunge design is something that is dirty looking and dull, consisting of colours such as grey, brown, beige and black. Grunge is a method some designers use to create posters and cover designs. To me the image on the left looked a bit like a movie poster which gave me the idea to create a modern webpage for a movie website where you can book online for a movie theatre. I designed the webpage with the same characteristics by using a dull grey background and throwing splashes of paint around and using quite a messy typeface to give it that dirty look.

Flat

Flat graphic design is exactly as it sounds, something that has been designed in a 2D fashion and has no effects such as shading highlights or glare to avoid it becoming 3D.

For my design I looked at flat design all over the web and saw  how it included mostly things such as people, everyday items such as a car like in the image on the left and so on. Because of this I decided to create a web based tool site where you can upload your photos and it will create either a photograph or a 2D sticker in the style of flat design, or you have the option of making your own. I decorated the site with a flat landscape in the background and apart from parts of the logo used a flat blocky sans- serif font throughout.
