Conceptual Design

Conceptual Design Work.

Conceptual Design is the art in which the idea or process is more important than the final piece itself. What makes conceptual design and art so interesting is that it can be almost anything it wants to be, and can be created using whatever materials or form you choose.

Good Use of Conceptual Design

This is a poster made to mark the event of Fernando Torres’ retirement.

In my opinion this is an effective use of conceptual design due to the many concepts you can pick from within the poster, and you can tell the creator of the poster has thought about how he can interpret different concepts within the poster. Firstly, the artist has incorporated a number within the word ”legend” and has managed to do so in a way that keeps the typography readable and not too hard to recognise what the word is actually supposed to say. The number itself is a reference to the shirt number that the player famously wore during his playing career, furthermore the number been in the colour red could be a reference to the clubs he played for the most in his career (Liverpool and Spain) and the colour of their shirts. The background is a football pitch that looks like is in the style of an old black and white photo, whilst the player didn’t actually play in those times, this may have been done to show his playing days are now in the past to be viewed in old photos or videos. This may have been done also to show how the player is now getting to an old age and to show his playing days are now behind him in the past to be viewed in the history books. Another thing that you can depict in this poster is how the pictures of the player playing for all his different teams and the background of the poster is fading away. This may have been done to also show how his playing career is fading away the older he gets over the years. In my opinion one improvement that could have been made to this is where the pictures of the player are faded, have the younger pictures of the player less faded and then the ones where he is older more faded to represent how the player has aged more effectively.

Poor Use of Conceptual Design and My Redesign

This is a poster made by Sky Sports to mark the event of German Defoe’s retirement.

Here I’ve noted a few ideas as to what I can add.

Here is my final edit of the poster.

This is again a poster made for a footballer that is retiring. In my opinion this poster had a poor use of conceptual design, this is because whilst it did have a minor use of conceptual design there just isn’t much going on overall in the poster and seems like it was made quite quickly with a lot of blank and empty space left around it, it just seemed unfinished. Within my redesign I tried to include the idea of history and time as much as I could. To begin with I blended a photo of the stadium the player most played in during his career (White Heart Lane) I did this mainly to make the poster not look as blank and to fill some of the empty space. To add to this I decreased the opacity of the stadium to make it look as though it is fading, I did this to create the idea that his time playing there is fading away into the past, I also did this with a photo of his shirt hanged up, usually when you hang a shirt up it is because you won’t be using it again anytime soon so I added this to show that but also decreased to opacity of this too to show this fading away as it is something the playing won’t be putting on again. I also added a set of boots hanging over the shirt, within football the term ”hanging up their boots” is used to show that a player is retiring, so I added this within the poster the show that, as in the original poster there was no real sign to say this as it was just pictures of the player. Furthermore, I added footballs to the players eyes, I did this to create the idea that the player was always looking for the ball, to score goals, or the idea that he only sees the goal.
